Nendo designs 50 chairs influenced by manga comics

50_manga_chairs16_kenichi_sonehara_designboom-818x578Japan-based design studio Nendo has created a series of 50 chairs for Friedman Benda, which are each based on the abstract lines and grids used in graphics for manga-style comic books. Manga consists of a series of frames on a single sheet of paper that create a structured sequence rendered with a high degree of flatness and abstraction. Similarly, Nendo’s designs are lined up in a grid, with each individual chair characterizing a specific ‘manga’ drawing element — so in effect each piece becomes a section within a story board. Each chair is made from polished stainless steel, and is intended to emulate a design element used to illustrate emotions or actions in stories. Nendo would present his 50 manga chairs installation during Milan Design Week 2016.
