Mumbai’s Terminal 2 unveiled

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently inaugurated the spanking new Terminal 2 at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai. The GVK-led consortium bagged the contract for Mumbai airport around three years ago and plans to weave the country’s incredible heritage in its design. The planning team constituted New York-based design team SOM (Roger Duffy, Peter Lefkovits and Laura Ettelman) along with fashion designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. The four-storey glass marvel has been inspired by dancing peacocks, lotuses and the chikan embroidery technique. It has 208 check-in counters, 43 security pedestals, 161 elevators, a one-day hotel and one transit hotel, automated baggage system (handles 9,600 bags per hour), and a dedicated six-lane elevated expressway.
