Heady ideas

Headboards needn’t only be a part of your bed. They can be extended in a variety of ways to add to the design, shows architect Sweta Shah. In the photograph of the guest room on the left, a panel of red-apple veneer climbs up the wall and curves to form a wrap of sorts. What’s more, a slit within the canopy forms the overhead ambient light with side reading lights on flexible arms fixed on to the panel. The picture on top illustrates another refreshing way you can treat a headboard. The bed in this master bedroom has a plump, pearl leather-covered panel at its head. The smartness comes from the laser-cut veneer and frosted-glass strip that runs through its centre. Illuminated from behind, it acts as a reading light. You could also try strips of distinctly different veneers for a designer look. The more practical of you could consider large, detachable ‘cushions’ suspended from metal rods.
