Fluidly Solid!

Zurich-based product designer Beat Karrer’s FluidSolids has been nominated for the 2013 Design Prize Switzerland. Made from industrial by-products, FluidSolids is a highly mouldable and flexible material, comprising of fibre, a filling material and a binding agent. A result of an experiment with homemade bioplastics, created with potato starch, Beat eventually built an affordable and eco-friendly material that is malleable and easy to manufacture. Once the composition of FluidSolids was finalized, the designer built a stool, wherein the legs were bound to the seat, minus nuts and bolts. FluidSolids also won the Materialica Design + Technology Award in 2011.
